A Conscious and Sustainable Approach to Leather Production

Belcinto was founded in 1961 in the North of Portugal, initially producing only leather belts. It gradually incorporated new product lines, such as travel bags, purses, wallets, hats, and accessories. Currently, Belcinto produces leather goods for leading brands in 35 countries. A path of continuous learning and the improvement of work practices is made possible by its growing international exposure and collaboration.

Leather goods that are made with care
Belcinto is deeply committed to social responsibility programmes with a focus on the environment and people. Testament to this is the initiative “Leather Goods by Belcinto”, which aims at manufacturing zero-waste products and perpetuating the traditional models of the brand by incorporating EcoDesign. The leather waste from the manufacturing process is reutilised and turned into one-of-a-kind accessories.

Belcinto also developed the “if you care, we care” concept, and offers its clients an unlimited guarantee and lifelong maintenance of its leather goods. This means that Belcinto’s products are passed along, from generation to generation, thus fighting fast fashion and consumerism while preventing waste. To further their purpose, a new production process based on Lean methodology and Agile lines was also adopted.

Community and environmental awareness
Belcinto only utilises leather and hides from other industries that are already in stock and that would otherwise be wasted. By substituting synthetic products with noble raw materials, they help mitigate the effects of climate change, promote the circular economy, and increase product sustainability.

Recent investments in facilities and equipment allowed for a substantial reduction in energy consumption. From January to May 2022, Belcinto cut its energy consumption by 25.3%. In 2021, it reduced CO2 emissions and energy and fuel consumption by 25.7% as well as its total waste volume compared to sales volume.

Adopting new forms of production that exclude solvent-based products, Belcinto significantly increased workplace safety and lowered health risks. Additionally, the business enables the employment of at-risk groups and people with disabilities, enhancing their quality of life and general well-being.
